I’ve made several sites before and i can never seem to get the .net ones ranked at all whereas the .coms and .co.uk’s seem to rank highly in google and yahoo. Does it make any difference what the extension is with regards to rankings?

I’ve got a couple of really helpful websites. I’ve submitted my site to every search engine that I know of. I’ve done the keywords and phrases and have my meta tags done. Still I’ll search for my site and it doesn’t rank very high…
Is there a way to get my websites higher in the rankings with out spending a billion dollars?
Thanks for any help.

Hello!
Wow you have no idea how long of an answer this could be. People have written books on this subject. It’s really hard to answer this question in the space here as there are so many different ways to get your ranking up.
The first question I would ask you is this, is the site a commercial site that you are going to be selling stuff, or just a personal site with information on a particular subject or interest?
If your answer is the former and you are going to be selling something from the site then here is what I would suggest. One big thing that all the search engines look for is what they call “backlinks”, these are links that link to your site from other sites.
But before you run off and try and get links from any old site remember this, the search engines also look at the quality of the backlinks.
So if your site is say for skateboard stuff, and you have links coming in from sites that are in no way skateboard related…then the value of the backlink is decreased, because it’s not considered a relevant backlink by the search engine.
With that said, one way to get good relevant backlinks is by writing articles and submitting them to article sites like EzineArticles.com or GoArticles.com.
You write brief, 250 – 500 word, articles on the particular subject you site is centered around, or if you are selling something on the site, then write articles about the product or service you are selling.
Many people say “oh I am not a writer, I can’t write articles”, but believe me, it’s not nearly as hard as you think. Here’ a quick lesson. Take about a 15 or 20 minutes and think of about 10 or so titles for articles. Then sit down and start writing the articles.
Articles are SHORT information pieces, it’s not like you are writing a book. Just write an opening couple of sentences explaining what the idea of the subject is or how your product or service solves a problem, then about 5 or 6 “bullet points” about how to product works or fixes a problem, then a short paragraph explaining the conclusion of your article subject or how your product or service solves the problem.
At the end of each article you put what the call a “bio-box” or “Author box”. In the author/bio box you put a link to your site saying for more information about this product or service click this link. Most article sites won’t accept articles that have your link in the article body itself but will allow it in the bio box.
Write as many articles as you can. The more the better. Then start submitting them to article sites. This benefits you two-fold. You get a backlink from a relevant site for each article you submit to the article sites.
Plus people will come and read your article and if it’s good they are allowed to copy the article and publish it on their site for content. But they have to keep the bio box intact. So each time someone copies your article onto their site you get yet another backlink to your site.
Backlinks and good content are probably the 2 main things that will get you noticed and ranked by search engines. Man I have gone on a bit here and that’s only one of many ways to get your site ranked. I could go on to things like “keywords”, meta tags and a variety of other things that affect your ranking. But far and away the best I can recommend is have good content on your site and start writing articles.
One other thing you might want to consider is get a blog going. Then have links from the blog to your site. Search engines love blogs and spider them regularly if they are posted to on a regular basis. This will send the search engines back to your site via the blog and give you yet again more backlinks to your site.
Well I have probably bored you to tears by this point rambling on here so I will let you go. If you really want to get your site ranked you need to do some research and start writing some articles. Do a search on Google or Yahoo for SEO, Search Engine Optimization, you will find tons of information on other ways to make your site get ranked.
Good Luck!
Cheers!
Mike

That’s the million dollar question. Some say in theory that it may have value in rankings as a hint towards overall relevance.
The bigger question is in finding out what drives the high bounce rate. Is it relevance issues with the keywords searched for or does it deal with usability issues of the site.http://www.webjutsu.com
