Marketing is the blanket for all efforts to sell a product, gain customers, brand a product and promote.
Advertising is the means to put these efforts forth through various channels
Public relations is just that, everything from how the public views your company to damage control for errors.
A large answer to a small question..that’s just the surface.

What are the best free ways to market a website? I have done Facebook ads, Adwords, and Google Base.
But what are some other ways to get a website traffic, and increase revenue?
Thanks in advance!

If you are addressing “marketing” for online websites, then the answer is quite simple: “Marketing is prominence of one’s online website on major search engines/directories since 85% of Internet surfers rely on search engines/directories for seeking and finding goods and services.” Again, it’s a fact that search engines/directories are the “Yellow Pages” of the Internet. And the “marketing” strategy is effective placement of metatags within webpage(s) according to search engine optimization (”SEO”) algorithms. It’s that simple.
Good luck!

I’m looking for marketing suggestions to attract customers to my golf league management website (I won’t list the site so I’m not accused of spamming). I have an Adwords account, I’ve gotten great rankings with keywords like “Golf League Management” (usually #1 or 2) on Yahoo and Live.com, and within the top 10 on Google. I’ve also posted to golf blogs and directories.
Golf leagues are so seasonal that I basically have a 2-3 month window each year to get new customers. They trickle in by finding it through the search engines, but obviously I’d like to maximize this as much as possible.
I’ve been considering dropping by some golf courses and trying to give a quick unsolicited pitch to whoever’s behind the counter in the golf pro shop, but I’m not sure how this will go over.
Any other suggestions out there? I’ve gotten great feedback from the leagues that are using it, but how do I convince others that it offers much more than they can do with an individual software program?

Where can I find out data which reveals which companies are making the most from internet advertising. I’ve checked Alexa but this is more about rankings.
I’m doing a thesis about virtual community advertising and want to see what sites like Facebook and Myspace make compared to search engine marketing and portals.
I need references (so it’s no good just providing the figures – I need facts).
