I want to know if it’s possible to purchase a domain name, put up a website and get ranked for a set of keywords in under a month. People talk of the Google Sandbox and I understand that it’s in a search engine’s best interest to make sure that a website will “stand the test of time” before ranking them well in their rankings, but what of sites that are brand new, but have valuable information on them?

Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld has written what many considers as comprehensive list of to-do things to get good rankings in Google. I suggest you start by reading this list, and then fortify your knowledge by participating in their search engine forums. There is a lot of brilliant SEO minds there who watches every hiccup of search engines and topics important for a new website (e.g. concept of sandboxing, datacenter watch during Google updates, redirect problems, etc.). Brett’s article can be found at http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/201…
WebmasterWorld also has a section that exclusively discusses how to get good rankings in Yahoo http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum35/
There are so many things to learn about search engines that it is hard to put it in this Yahoo Answers format.
Hope the above helps

It is possible if the keyword/phrase you are wanting to rank for is rather obscure like “yellow penguins” or “obsequious pencil”. If it is a competitive phrase then it will take much longer and the more competitive it is the longer it will take. For a competitive phrase with over 10 million hits on Google it will be 12 months plus and that is if you know what you are doing.

the thing is for google, it will take about three months to get on the top rankings and you can be on the top 100 ranking for about only a month. so it is adviceable that u optimize ur website regularly so that when google uploads new websites, yours can also be picked up. As for advertising on other websites, i dont think thats a good idea cos the fact remains that as at december 2005, 55.8% of those that use search engines use google so there are better chances of your site being viewed one google than any other website. hope this helps.
