I don’t think it helps much. You need to tell them you’re there I think. My IT man did it for me, he just went to google and registered my website somehow – he said it wasn’t difficult – sorry can’t be more help, but I don’t think links are the key.

Of course.
If you want, recommend Link Partner Finder:
Easy to find thousands of link partners relevant to keyword: Travel.

Make sure your links are circular – so that you recommend site A, site A links to site B and site B links to you. One way links are more beneficial that reciprocal links.
Try to pick sites that have content related to the content of your site. If yours is about cars, don’t link to a health advice site.
If you set up more sites, use different servers so that links do not appear from the same IP address.

It certainly helps the search engines find you because as they crawl the web indexing sites they follow links so if they index say 20 sites that have links to your site then you will get “crawled” 20 times,OK that’s a simplified way of looking at it,but anything you can do to get your site noticed is worth considering, after all getting links has helped one of my sites quite a lot.

Yes, backlinks are a huge resource for increasing page ranking. That’s why some of the biggest probloggers market the idea. The biggest thing right now is to get viral. Check out my blog if you want to get tons of backlinks. http://bmoneysavvy.blogspot.com

I dont think its “key” in being the optimum, that would be having a good website, having good coding and having good dwell time (time visitors stay). But it can help, especially from high ranked site.

Here’s a few tidbits of information so that if you just do these things, you’ll be doing about 80% of what you need to be search engine optimized.
1) Pick the keyword you want to optimize (most people get this wrong – see the end of this answer)
2) Make sure title tag contains this keyword.
3) Make sure an H1 tag contains this keyword.
4) Make sure your meta description contains this keyword along with other relevant information.
5) Bold, Italicize, or Underline this keyword somewhere in the body of the content (probably just pick on of these 3 styles).
6) Make sure that the 1st and the last paragraph contain the keyword.
7) Get links into your site from external sites, making sure that the anchor text contains this keyword.
Doing so will ensure that you are doing everything in your power to rank highly for a given keyword.
But what keyword do you pick?
Most people get this wrong!
You want to pick the keyword that is going to generate the most money for you, NOT what is going to generate the most traffic.
Here’s a good site that I just found which explains the concept of keyword tracking:

Even though the article pertains to PPC advertising, it’s still relevant for what you are trying to accomplish.
Hope that helps!
