Most of the information you need can be found at the bottom of this entry in Wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Site…

First upload it to your server or have it hosted on a server at a location like http://www.thesportinglodege.co.uk/sitemap.xml
You can add a location to Robots.txt and upload the location to your Google Webmaster Tools and Yahoo! Site Explorer. You want to do the Robots.txt for all search engines to find your sitemap, and Google Webmaster Tools to get back information about crawl errors and website info.

Good for you to include your website (haha include it in everything you talk about).
Submitting a site map helps you get more hits–just submitting your web address would only bring up searches that had something to do with the front page, not the whole thing. It helps rankings because if people go to your website via a google product search, for instance, and only saw the product and left, that hit would not be otherwise counted and you would never boost your rank. Good luck!
